What Is a Bimini Top?

A bimini top is an open-canvas shade canopy supported by a metal frame, designed to protect boaters from direct sun and overhead weather without enclosing the cockpit. Unlike full canvas enclosures or rigid hardtops, a bimini features an open-sided design that preserves full airflow and 360-degree visibility on the water.

On wakeboard boats, custom biminis mount directly to the tower frame, providing high-clearance overhead shade while keeping the surrounding deck clear for water sports gear, board racks, and movement. When shade is not needed, the top quickly collapses and zips into a protective storage boot on the tower.

How Samson Sports Is Revolutionizing Biminis

New ideas demand new technology. While brainstorming ways to make bimini tops more user-friendly, we developed custom quick-release hardware that allows your top to be deployed or stowed in seconds.

By eliminating traditional rear support straps, our design leaves the area around your board racks completely clear, making it fast and effortless to load and unload wakeboards or surfboards. When open, you get maximum overhead coverage. When it’s time to pack up, simply engage the push-button quick-release fittings, zip the fabric into the integrated storage boot, and store it directly on the tower.

Benefits of Adding a Custom Bimini to Your Boat

Investing in a high-quality tower bimini top completely transforms your experience on the water by combining all-day comfort with practical functionality. Key benefits include:

  • All-Day Sun & Heat Protection: High-grade Sunbrella® fabric blocks harmful UV rays and drastically reduces cockpit temperatures, keeping driver and passengers cool and protected during peak daylight hours.
  • Unobstructed Board Rack Access: Traditional biminis use rear support straps that cross directly in front of board racks. Samson’s strap-free design leaves full, clear access to your wakeboards and surfboards so you can swap gear quickly and safely.
  • High-Speed Stability & Rattle-Free Fit: Custom-patterned specifically to your tower’s unique geometry, our biminis maintain structural integrity at cruising speeds without flapping, sag, or noisy vibrations.
  • Effortless Single-Person Deployment: Featuring push-button quick-release hardware, the canopy opens or stows into its integrated boot in seconds without requiring extra tools or assistance.
  • Weather & Water Resistance: Breathable, marine-grade acrylic fabrics repel water and resist mildew, preventing moisture buildup while standing up to harsh sun, salt, and rain exposure.
  • Preserves Interior Upholstery: By shading your boat’s seating and cockpit area, a bimini helps prevent leatherette and vinyl upholstery from fading, cracking, or deterioration caused by prolonged sun exposure.
  • Sleek, Custom Aesthetics: Tailored directly to your tower’s frame lines, a custom bimini complements the overall profile of your boat rather than looking like a bulky, aftermarket add-on.

We Use Premium Sunbrella® Marine Materials

Every Samson bimini is crafted using premium Sunbrella® marine fabrics, renowned for industry-leading UV resistance, water repellency, and fade resistance.

  • UPF 50+ Protection: Blocks over 98% of harmful UV rays.
  • Fade-Proof Color: Solution-dyed acrylic locks pigment into the fiber core so colors stay vibrant under harsh sun.
  • Bleach-Cleanable: Stain-resistant finish withstands easy spot-cleaning—even with bleach solutions—without losing color.
  • Mildew & Water Repellent: Synthetic fibers provide zero organic material for mold growth while shedding rain and spray.

Samson Bimini Tower FAQs

Have questions about choosing, installing, or caring for your custom wakeboard tower bimini? We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions our team gets asked by boat owners and riders below.

If you can’t find the exact answer you’re looking for, give our team a call or email us — we’re here to help you get the perfect fit for your boat.

Yes, absolutely. Many professionals — including tournament drivers, wake coaches, and professional wakesurfers — rely heavily on tower bimini tops. While beginners often assume biminis get in the way of riding, pros know that high-end, custom tower biminis provide essential shade without interfering with tow lines, board racks, or performance.

Many professionals consider a bimini top essential equipment for these reasons:

  • Stamina for Long Days on the Water: Pro drivers and coaches spend 8 to 12 hours a day on the helm. Direct sun exposure leads to heat fatigue, reduced reaction time, and dehydration. Overhead shade keeps drivers alert and focused on the rider.
  • Glare Reduction & Clear Visibility: Direct overhead sunlight makes it difficult to read multi-function touchscreens, ballast gauges, and water surface conditions. A bimini cuts helm glare, improving visibility for safe boat handling.
  • Passenger & Athlete Recovery: Between sets, pro riders need a shaded environment to cool down, rehydrate, and recover muscle performance rather than baking in the heat.

Traditional biminis use low-hanging support straps that block board racks and interfere with tow ropes. Pros choose custom tower biminis — like Samson Sports designs — because they mount directly to the tower frame with zero rear straps.

This design keeps the tow point completely open, allows rapid board swapping from side racks, and handles high-speed runs without flapping or sagging.

Not when designed correctly. A properly engineered tower bimini sits high enough to give the tow rope full clearance through 180-degree pulls. Custom biminis are rigid and aerodynamic, meaning they don’t drag down boat speed, alter wake shape, or create structural stress on the tower.

Yes! We can craft a custom Samson bimini top for virtually any factory or aftermarket wakeboard tower. However, because every Samson bimini is custom-patterned for a glove-like fit, you must bring your boat and tower to our facility in Camas, WA so our team can custom-fabricate the hardware and frame directly on your boat.

Yes. Samson towers are built using standard 2.5-inch aircraft-grade tubing and engineered to accommodate most factory or third-party universal bimini tops. That said, universal tops often rely on low-hanging rear straps that block your board racks, which is why most Samson tower owners prefer our integrated, strap-free bimini design.

No. Because every Samson bimini is custom-designed alongside your tower or custom-fit to your existing boat setup, we account for all tower accessories during fabrication. The frame is contoured to sit clear of tow-rope attachment points, navigation lights, and tower speakers, ensuring you maintain full sound projection, clear tow lines, and 100% functionality of your gear.
