Making History at the IWWF Cable Championships in China

We have to start with the 2026 IWWF World Cable Wakeboard and Wakeskate Championships. For the first time ever, this major world championship event took place in China. Athletes gathered at the Shunyi Olympic Cable Park in the Shunyi District, a world-class facility originally built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The turnout was huge, with around 180 top riders from 30 different countries and regions hitting the water. And the competition was fierce across all age divisions. 

In the Open division, Max Milde took home the Open Men’s title, while Julia Rick dominated ahead of the pack for Open Women’s.

The veteran riders showed up in full force, too. Smaiylkulov Almaz claimed victory in the 30+ Men’s division alongside Douma Monique in 30+ Women’s. Also, Lysenko Volodymyr won the 40+ Men’s, and Goncea Ioana secured the 40+ Women’s title. 

Watching these athletes carve through the cable park proves that wakeboarding is a lifelong passion.

Big Wakes and Big Payouts in Italy at the IWWF World Wakeboard Championships

While the cable park was going off in China, boat riders were throwing down in Rieti, Italy, at the 2026 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships. The event was held at the Club Nautico Varco Sabino Wave (CNVS Wave) on the beautiful Lago del Salto.

Over 160 riders from 23 countries competed behind the official towboat: the Malibu M230 provided by Malibu Boats. Between the team overall title and ten age-group categories (ranging from Under-14 all the way to Over-50), there was non-stop action. The Open Men’s and Open Women’s competitors also battled it out for their piece of a $50,000 cash purse.

Sam Brown charged hard to win the Open Men’s bracket, while Eugenia De Armas took the top spot for Open Women’s. We also saw amazing rides in the older divisions, with David O’Caoimh winning Over 30 Men’s, Marcelo Giardi taking Over 40 Men’s, Mariana Osmak winning Over 40 Women’s, and Daniel Duquesnoy showing everyone how it’s done in Over 50 Men’s.

The Pro Wakeboard Tour Showdown at Lake David

Back in the States, the Pro Wakeboard Tour (PWT) held its thrilling championship showdown at Lake David. This final stop decided the overall season titles, and the riding conditions were absolutely perfect. Riders threw everything they had behind the massive, towering wake of the Supra SA 550.

Going into the weekend, Nick Rapa held the championship lead for Pro Men’s Wakeboard, but Daniel Johnson was chasing him closely. The Pro Women’s Wakeboard division, presented by Liquid Force, was also a massive highlight. 

This season marked the highly anticipated return of professional women to the tour, culminating in an epic battle between Eugenia De Armas and Meagan Ethell.

Stop 3 featured a unique main event format, where Tyler took a massive victory and officially secured second place overall for the entire 2026 season.

WakeSmart: New Guidelines for Canandaigua Lake

As wake boats produce bigger waves, protecting our local environments is more important than ever. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association (CLWA) teamed up with marinas, including Canandaigua Boatworks, to launch the “WakeSmart” outreach campaign.

These proposed guidelines outline simple, voluntary best practices to help riders maximize safety while preventing environmental damage on Canandaigua Lake. Instead of strict bans, this is about being a smart, respectful boater.

To prevent large waves from speeding up shoreline erosion, operators are urged to stay at least 500 feet away from shorelines, docks, and other vessels. The CLWA also states that operators must ride in water that is at least 20 feet deep. 

Driving a heavy wake boat in shallow water kicks up bottom lakebed sediments, which harms the local ecology. Because of this strict 20-foot depth rule, wake boaters need to completely avoid the shallow north and south ends of Canandaigua Lake. 

Also, drivers are instructed to avoid making repeated passes in the exact same location. Spreading out your travel path stops heavy, concentrated wave energy from hammering the exact same segment of the shoreline over and over.
